Seeds in His Garden - The Beginning

Beginning ...

Seeds In His Garden was founded in 1998 by Rebecca Adams, a woman from California, U.S.A.  Becky’s intention was to stay one month.  However, a new journey was about to begin. Becky arrived and volunteered her time with children in 1997.  She stayed in a tent in a slum located in the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. Although the month was full of activities and suggestions on better planning and development, it was clear it was not enough. She began preparing for her departure, but her heart and soul was broken.  She was left with an unanswered question of responsibility. As she lay with tears one night she felt her spirit was heavy and an inner voice kept repeating, "Who will care, love and commit to these children after your gone?" Unable to answer the question, she felt that the only thing she could do is, return and accept the responsibility herself. She left knowing she would have to sell what she could to start.  She was aware that she would need to  prepare her family, sell her beloved horse and say farewell to friends and all the comfort of home. Six months later she founded and developed what is now known as "“Seeds in His Garden Children's Home Trust". Becky's says that her faith in God is what drives her amidst many difficult times. The first year was a challenge.  Becky got cerebral malaria within a few weeks.  Then just as she was cleared to return to work, the bomb blast happened at the U.S. Embassy.  She began assisting the Israeli team in their efforts at the site. Then the first container arrived with all the bribery issues, police station and stranded container truck to deal with.  Just months late she had a car accident that severed her ear and caused several brokenl bones.  Still after all the trauma and difficulties both at the beginning and to this day, she believes that one person can make a difference. Today, she still finds new challenges everyday.  Becky believes that her faith in God is the critical element to developing the strength and wisdom to truly stand in the face of each struggle, and continue the work.  "Children are the key to making a difference in the world."  "Without our commitment to develop them in all the critical elements of a human being, there is little chance that they will have the tools to assist themselves or others." "We all have the ability to cause transformation in our lives as well as those around us."

rev adams with boyA BRIEF HISTORY

For many years, the affairs of Seeds In HIS Garden in the United States was handled though Cypress Community Church. When I retired as the Founding Pastor in 2005, the operation of SIHG could no longer be maintained at Cypress Community Church, and it became necessary to form a new 501C3 to allow USA donors to receive tax credit. Hands of Hope International was formed to not only become the funding agency for Seeds In HIS Garden, but also for other worthy projects in the world. During the first three years HOHI was able to fully fund SIHG, and in addition provide thousands of dollars to many worthy projects both in America and in more than a dozen other countries. During the past three years it has been necessary to devote virtually all contributions to the support of SIHG. This became necessary for at least three reasons. (1) Considerable funds were needed for the SIHG building project. (2) An increasing amount of money was needed for the continuing education of the SIHG children (3) The serious economic downturn in America made it increasingly difficult to raise funds.

CHANGES AND WHY

For a number of personal reasons, it was decided that it would be best to close the office of HOHI and find another mission that would become the funding agency for SIHG. A major reason for the change was the fact that I turned 81 and it became increasingly difficult to travel to Africa and other parts of America as frequently as needed. In January of 2011 Discover the World based in Pasadena, California became that agency.

CURRENT COMMITMENT AND HOW

At this time I am committed to raising funds, writing newsletters, maintaining contact with old donors, and seeking to find new ones. This is done primarily through my home office and the internet. Discover the World (DTW) is committed to handling all administrative responsibilities that were previously handled in the Monterey office including bookkeeping, publishing of newsletters, donor acknowledgment, and annual State and Federal reports.

Kenyan Coffee

Be sure that you have supported our exports here in Kenya.  Coffee and Tea are large exports for Kenya.  The coffee you drink can keep a family from going hungry.  Many people count on the jobs available on tea and coffee farms.

Web Site News!

For several months there has been anticipation about a web site. It is important to note that all the efforts on this site have been for the sole purpose of engaging others to support the work with the children in Kenya. All the credit for the efforts made to get the site available for those interested go to ALL the children of Seeds in His Garden. They are the ones that sacrificed the most as others made attempts for something that they would be proud of. Children are the key to the future of Kenya. God Bless them!
