In the Furnace of Kenya

The bond between me and Shadrack became very tight because of all the time we spent together. I have made him a diary with a lock so he can write down his feelings. He appreciated my help sincerely and made me a bead necklace. I hope he will continue to behave well and work on himself because he is a very intelligent boy that can make a huge impact in his life. I will miss him as well as the others when we leave.

The people live in shanties, the environment is very unhygienic and there was trash everywhere. The streets we walked through became very narrow the longer we walked. Our first stop was a day care center for babies and toddlers. Here we found at least 25 children packed together in a room no bigger than three square meters. The kids were dressed way too warm and their faces were covered with mucus. All they did was cry and when I looked into their eyes, all I could see was emptiness.
